Department of Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery

Introduction

Our department, established newly in April 2020, specialize in the surgical treatment for congenital cardiovascular diseases of baby, children, and even in adulthood. The congenital heart disease is different from a common heart disease of adult, such as myocardial infarction, valvar heart disease, or aortic aneurysm, because of the anatomical malformation in fatal period. Therefore the treatment is often more complex with medication, cardiac catheteriac intervention, and surgery. And the clinical observation and postoperative follow-up are also important, while patients grow up.

The strategy for disease depends on not only clinical diagnoses but also general conditions of patient, including age, body-weight, nutrition, and other complicated disease. We always consider the best and the safest care for each patient before and after the surgery.

We cooperate with pediatric cardiologists, anesthesiologist, clinical engineers, and specialists of other divisions for every surgical case, because all of us hope and try to get the best results for our patients.

Patient care at our department

Before the surgery, pediatric cardiologist diagnoses with X-ray, electrical cardiogram, cardiac ultrasound, and cardiac catheterization and checks the general condition for the anesthesia and procedure at out-patient office. Then patient admits in the pediatric ward with/without an attendant. Especially patient spends several days just after surgery in the pediatric intensive care unit for the postoperative critical care. It usually takes few weeks for recovery, depending on the postoperative course.

In case of more severe condition, complex disease, or necessity of hybrid therapy of surgery and catheteriac intervention, our other department of Saitama Medical University International Medical Center in Hidaka will be responsible for all treatment.
