May 21,2024 Update
Thank you for taking a look at the website for the Department of Infectious Disease and Infection Control at Saitama Medical Center. I am Hideaki Ohno and am responsible for the operations of the Department of Infectious Diseases. Our department was established in 2014 at the Medical Center, and we still have a short history as a department.
Now, if you look at the medical departments at Saitama Medical Center, you may have noticed that there are many medical departments that handle specific organ diseases such as the Department of Pulmonary Medicine, the Department of Gastroenterology, the Department of Digestive Tract Surgery, the Department of Neurosurgery and the Department of Ophthalmology, but the Department of Infectious Diseases is literally the department which treats the sickness called "infectious disease" as the target. Even if you simply say, "infectious diseases," so many diseases are included, for instance, influenza, pneumonia, cystitis, meningitis, infectious enteritis, syphilis, and AIDS, etc.The pathogens that cause these "infectious diseases" are also diverse, such as bacteria, viruses, fungus, etc., and because "infectious diseases" occur in all organs of the whole body, the range of practice inevitably becomes wide. Therefore, cooperation with the doctors of the various medical departments becomes indispensable, and the Department of Infectious Diseases also conducts daily medical services in cooperation with each department. Besides these, what were previously believed to be overseas infectious diseases such as dengue fever, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), H1N1 influenza, etc., are currently becoming a real threat in Japan as a result of active international exchange, and we are also working on measures for these.
As one of the members of the infection control unit that is installed in the hospital, we are also engaged in the prevention of hospital infections and the proper use of antimicrobial drugs for the control of drug-resistant bacteria.
Although the Department of Infectious Diseases is an inconspicuous medical department in any facility, we hope that we will be able to help your medical treatment, even a little through our activities.
The medical treatment of the Department of Infectious Diseases is limited to patients who are presently hospitalized at the Medical Center. Basically, we do not perform independent outpatient or inpatient treatment. We work when there is a request for treatment from other departments of the Medical Center. Further, when it is determined that it is necessary to treat a patient at a specialized facility rather than our hospital as a result of medical treatment (e.g., smear positive pulmonary tuberculosis, etc.), we will refer them to other medical institutions as appropriate. Also, we accept consultations such as diagnosis, inspection methods and treatment methods regarding the various infectious diseases from other departments at any time. Thank you for your understanding.
In addition, as part of the medical treatment, we study in a daily conference all of the patients for whom we have detected pathogenic microorganisms in their blood cultures and discuss and advise on the treatment methods with the doctors in charge as necessary. Further, as part of the activity of the infection control unit, we confirm all cases where a broad spectrum of antibiotic or an anti-MRSA drug were used, with the cooperation of the Pharmaceutical Department.

In addition to fever, there are a variety of symptoms derived from the infected organs.

The main role of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Infection Control at Saitama Medical School General Medical Center is to respond to fevers and infections that occur in the hospital after receiving consultation from other departments.
In April 2024, an outpatient clinic specializing in infectious diseases has been newly established by an infectious disease specialist.
When referring a patient, we would appreciate it if you could follow the following flow as much as possible in advance.
*If the above measures are difficult, please explain to the patient that he/she should bring a letter of referral and be seen on an outpatient day. Please explain that if the patient is seen after hours, the doctor may not be able to see the patient on the same day, so please be sure to see the patient during office hours (9:00-11:00).For transfer of inpatients, please contact the Community Relations Office (Tel. No. 049-228-3750) and consult directly with a doctor in the department. Please understand that depending on the time of your consultation, we may assign you to see a doctor on another day.
The Department is looking for staff who can work with us in the treatment of infectious diseases, nosocomial infection control, and promotion of proper use of antimicrobial agents. Those who wish to study infectious diseases for a certain period of time while specializing in other departments are also welcome.
In addition, our department is a member of the Center for Clinical Infectious Diseases formed by the three Saitama Medical University Hospitals (University Hospital, General Medical Center, and
International Medical Center), and we welcome those who want to do clinical work but also energetically
pursue research related to infectious diseases. If you are interested, please contact us,
