October 3 2024 Update
I am Tomoo Fukuda. I was appointed professor of dermatology from April 2016.
Our Department of Dermatology has been working to treat a variety of skin
diseases since the beginning of the Saitama Medical Center and has supported
dermatology treatment in Saitama Prefecture for more than 30 years. As a
university hospital with a focus on clinical pathology, we are actively
accepting patients from local doctors. In addition, at our hospital, we are
proud to have the highest number of beds in the prefecture, and a feature is
that many patients come to our hospital from both inside and outside the
prefecture. Therefore, even with dermatology, we examine patients with severe
diseases and patients whose doctors are having hard time with diagnosis and
treatment. We are active with inpatient as well as outpatient medical treatment.
Dermatologists treat a wide range of diseases, and basically examine all sickness which cause a change in the skin. Specifically, there are eczema and dermatitis, skin infections, autoimmune diseases, allergies, and intractable diseases such as malignant tumors. We also perform surgery and chemotherapy for malignant tumors in our department. In particular, we are focusing as a university on diagnosis, and we consider a combination of various tests.
The Department of Dermatology focuses on the education of young physicians, and does not cram in medical knowledge, but is engaged in building awareness and an attitude for medical examination and treatment as a physician. This idea is the Saitama Medical University's aim of "fostering good clinical practitioners," and we hope that such doctors will become supporters of local medicine and be a trusted physician for their patients. In the Department of Dermatology, all of the doctors who enter the department are aiming to become a dermatologist, and we believe that these efforts will lead to the providing of high-quality medical care for patients, and not only for the growth of the physicians. In addition, we conduct study meetings throughout the medical office for the treatment of severe and intractable diseases, and we consider the treatments suitable for each patient as a means to improve the quality of medical care. In particular, the treatments for intractable diseases may span other departments in our hospital and we undertake firm cooperation with other departments and other specialties for comprehensive medical treatment.
If you are visiting our hospital for the first time, please follow the procedures at new patient reception. In addition, if you have already seen a doctor here, please complete reception at the automatic return visit kiosk. The reception is available until 11:00 am.
Those who will visit us for the 2nd time or after as an outpatient, please make a reservation. You can be examined if you do not have a reservation, but you may have to wait. Please be aware of this. If you are not feeling particularly well or have a fever, please contact us.
In the Department of Dermatology, the questionnaire form lists the progress and symptoms that have been consulted on, diseases that are currently being treated and internal medications being taken, and allergies, etc., for patients who have previously consulted and first time patients. After that, we would like to hear the details of the course of treatment in the room before the examination room, so please cooperate with us.
In the Department of Dermatology, the shape of the rash and the progress and
color are also important, so we may want to have a record of your photos in the
examination room.
Please be sure to bring your "medication record book" in the case of
re-examination because we will ask about the history of internal medicines when
you visit us.
If you would like to have a second opinion, please ask your doctor to provide you
with a referral letter and their examination findings. Please download the
application form from the hospital's website and bring it to the General Affairs
Section of the medical department in advance. Professor Tomoo Fukuda or
Associate Professor Yuichi Teraki will be consulted at a later date. Depending
on the content, they may not be able to respond to the consultation. See the
second opinion outpatient section on the hospital website for details. For
further inquiries, please contact the General Affairs Section (person
responsible for second opinions).

Our department accepts referrals for a variety of skin diseases. Please give the referral letter to the patient you are referring. In such cases, please describe in detail the course of the disease and the history of medications. In addition, it is helpful if you can attach data for a patient who has had blood drawn, and the photographs and the pathology reports / tissue specimen at the time of the biopsy for a patient who has had the biopsy.
At present, our department does not have duty on weekday evenings and holidays. For this reason, please explain to the patient that they need to visit the hospital during the day (by 11 a.m.) on weekdays. Also, please confirm directly with the Department of Dermatology outpatient (phone number: 049-228-3637) if you think that they need to visit outside of the clinic hours on a weekday afternoon. Thank you for your cooperation.
The transition to inpatient will be determined after consultation. Therefore, please avoid explanations that suggest hospitalization before the referral.
For patients with severe toxic rash and drug rashes, we would prefer if you were to refer them without the administration of steroids as much as possible.
For patients with atopic dermatitis and psoriasis, it would be helpful if you could describe the most recent type of steroid external medication and the amount of usage per month.
Allergy tests except for blood samples (metal allergies, etc.) cannot be carried out on the day of the visit. Therefore, on the initial consultation day they will make a reservation for an examination date and they may be asked to visit the hospital several times later.
