July 11,2024 Update
Ten years have passed since I was appointed to this department in July 2007. Since then, we have been aiming to create a facility that can comprehensively treat all blood diseases, from hematological malignancies such as leukemia, malignant lymphoma and multiple myeloma, to anemia and other general hematological diseases. During the past decade, research on the molecular pathogenesis of blood diseases has progressed dramatically, and the development of new therapeutic drugs has progressed and introduced into the clinics. As a result, the improvement in the treatment outcomes for hematological malignancies over the last ten years has been remarkable. We have established a system that allows our facility to practice state-of-the-art medical care without being late in the flow. In addition to a medical treatment system where we can practical treatments from normal chemotherapy, to all kinds of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and we have developed into one of the leading blood care facilities in Japan, which can also conduct early clinical trials with non-approved drugs. At the same time, we have been trying to develop a team medical system with multi-disciplinary roles, as well as patient-oriented medical care. There is consistency of activity with the establishment of seminars and public lectures that are easy for the patient advocacy group to understand.
In order to practice such advanced medicine, it is essential to improve the level of the individuals who contribute it within the entire organization, and it is necessary for them to obtain a medical degree along with the qualifications of a specialist of internal medicine and hematology. To achieve this, we strive to disseminate our research results not only domestically but also internationally without neglecting our daily efforts. The motto of our Department of Hematology is to "Learn about medical care, education and research with Vision, Passion, and Mission". We would like to accept young doctors who aim to learn hematology and as many patients as possible, and we strive to be a base for blood treatments centering on hematological malignancies.
The Department of Hematology at Saitama Medical Center,Saitama Medical University promotes the practice of medical treatment with a high degree of satisfaction for the patient, and we promote education with a wide international perspective for young physicians and students who are responsible for the next generation. We want to practice better blood treatment and endeavor to contribute to society through these kinds of daily activities.
Our hospital has total26 beds in cluding private rooms, as a sterilized ward, and is capable of treating all blood diseases, as well as hematological malignancies and general diseases. We are certified with the Japan Marrow Donor Program, thus we can perform all kinds of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. It is one of the leading facilities in Saitama Prefecture as well as Japan, and we are actively conducting clinical trials. It is very important to provide medical care covering a wide range of diseases for for the treatment of blood diseases, therefore,we aim to provide high-quality medical care by accepting a wide range of emergency cases, including acute leukemia and other diseases, with flexibility.
As a basic policy for the therapeutic approaches, we select a treatment options on a scientific basis (Evidence Based Medicine) according to globally approved clinical data, we then explain the medical policy sufficiently to the patient and family, and obtain his or her agreement, and then we prioritize the medical care that they can receive with peace of mind.
In recent years, a variety of new drugs have been developed and applied in practice and are now being incorporated into the standard treatment for blood diseases. Our department actively uses new therapeutic drugs and immunotherapy which have been approved for insurance coverage. We are also contributing to the improvement of the treatment results for blood diseases by promoting clinical trials which we have led and through multi-facility joint testing at JCOG and JALSG and other trialgroups in Japan. In the same way, we are often selected as an implementation facility for clinical trials for new drugs that are not yet approved for medical treatment of blood diseases on a nationwide scale, and we conduct clinical trials for a number of new drugs. In this way, we are committed to providing a wide range of treatment options, ranging from normal standard treatments to clinical trials.
We are focusing not only on inpatient care but also on outpatient treatment. If patients are able to attend outpatient treatment and need chemotherapy with a blood transfusion or an anticancer agent, then that quality of life is preferred, and we actively choose to treat them as outpatients. We also cooperate with other departments in the hospital. Our hospital has one of the most comprehensive perinatal, maternal and child care centers in Japan, and we have experienced many cases of diagnosis and treatment of blood abnormalities associated with pregnancy. The most common cases of hematological malignancy are malignant lymphoma, but for the diagnosis of malignant lymphoma, Professor Junichi Tamaru, the Department of Pathology in our hospital, is one of the most prominent pathologist in Japan, and we regularly conduct conferences with the pathology department and aim for accurate diagnoses based on clinical and pathological information both.

If necessary, we may ask them to visit again on weekdays from Monday to Friday. The doctor will instruct them at the time of their consultation.
Our hospital is a transplant facility accredited by the Japan Marrow Donor Program. In addition to transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells from related and unrelated donors umbilical cord blood transplantation from the Japan Marrow Donor Program donors are also actively utilized, if adaptable.
We also conduct a number of clinical trials. If you have patients who are interested in a clinical trial for a target diseases, we would appreciate it if you could refer them to us. In this case, we would like to ask you to provide their medical information.
