September 2,2019 Update
The Saitama Medical Center GICU started operations with 6 beds next to the central operating room on 4th floor of the main building in October 1997. We moved to the second floor of the new lifesaving building in April 2017 with the opening of the new lifesaving building and are currently operating with 16 beds, 8 beds for patients following major surgery + 8 beds for patients with cardiovascular and central nervous disorders (CCU/SCU) but will be operating with 20 beds in the future.
Many staff members are engaged in the treatment of severe patients in the general intensive care room, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including 1 or more intensive care anesthesiologists and one or more dedicated nurse for every 2 patients.
<Critical Care > is mainly the treatment of patients with issues such as from accidents, poisoning, and burns that occurred outside the hospital, and I think that everyone knows about it because it is covered well in a popular TV drama. On the other hand, there are few people who are as familiar with < Intensive Care >, and they are not able to explain clearly what kind of medical care is being done, even among the medical profession.
The Intensive Care Unit is a division that improves the prognosis of patients by intensively treating them after major surgery, those who have deteriorated in condition during hospitalization, and severe patients in the hospital. In the Intensive Care Unit, the anesthesiologist, the attending physician, the physician from the related department, the dedicated nurse, the pharmacist, the clinical engineer, and the occupational therapist, etc. conduct team medical treatment.
A major feature of the General Intensive Care Unit at the Saitama Medical Center is that an acute medical professional from the Department of Anesthesiology is actively involved in the intensive care. They contribute to the improvement of the quality of the medical treatment by continuing systematic management for surgical patients, such as respiratory management, circulation management, and pain management, which are specialties of the Department of Anesthesiology from during the surgery.
Anesthesiologist in charge: An Intensive care specialist, an Anesthesiologist, and a second-semester anesthesia trainee will rotate taking turns being in charge of the treatment in cooperation with your doctor and related medical department.
