Introduction
The abdominal organ transplantation in our hospital was initiated in 1999 for kidney transplant, since then cross-sectional team engaged in patient care and surgery. In 2014, along with preparing multiple abdominal organ transplant, including liver and pancreas, the comprehensive abdominal organ transplant center was established to manage multidisciplinary team for patient care and surgery. Now our center performs kidney, liver and pancreas transplant. There are many common issues among those abdominal organ transplant, such as immunological and serological evaluation before surgery, donor selection, immunosuppression after transplant and the ethical issues of living donor organ transplantation. Our center manages such things centrally and pursue benefits and safety for patients.
Patient care at our department
- Living donor Liver transplant
- Our center is certified to perform living donor liver transplant and started living liver transplant in 2018. A living donor liver transplant is a surgery to replace a failed liver with a part of healthy liver from living donor, who is a family or close relative of the recipient. Living donor liver transplant has been an established medicine for acute and chronic liver failure, however, still has high morbidity and mortality rate. Our multidisciplinary team will provide meticulous surgery and patient care to pursue patient safety and outcome.
- Pancreas transplant and Simultaneous pancreas and kidney transplant
- The patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus, especially those who has renal failure and frequent hypoglycemia attack, may benefit from a simultaneous pancreas and kidney transplant or a pancreas transplant. Our center has been selected as one of 18 transplant centers for pancreas transplant nationwide since 2019. We perform a pancreas transplant and a simultaneous pancreas and kidney transplant with cooperation from National committee of pancreas transplant.
- Kidney transplant
- Our kidney transplant program was established in 1999, since then, we have performed kidney transplant from both of diseased and living donor under cooperation of cross-sectional team. Now our center has organized a multidisciplinary team for multi organ transplant and is recognized as most active center for kidney transplant in Saitama prefecture.

- Living donor liver transplantation

- Liver cirrhosis (B-type cirrhosis, C-type cirrhosis, alcoholic cirrhosis, autoimmune cirrhosis, non-B non-C cirrhosis)
- Cholestatic disease (primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), Byler's disease, Caroli disease, biliary atresia (BA))
- Fulminant hepatitis
- Metabolic diseases (α1-antitrypsin deficiency, hemochromatosis, hemosiderosis, Wilson's disease, glycogenosis, hypercitrullinemia, other)
- Liver Tumors (liver cancer (primary, metastatic), benign tumors)
- Other (e.g, Budd-Chiari syndrome, congenital hepatic fibrosis, etc.)
- Kidney transplantation

- Those who are undergoing dialysis (hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis) with chronic renal failure

Referval
A referral for a living donor liver transplantation and a pancreatic transplantation is accepted at the outpatient clinic of Surgery. A referral for kidney transplantation is accepted at the outpatient clinic of the Blood Purification Center.
- Liver transplantation
- We have been preforming living liver transplant since 2018. If living donor liver transplant is not suitable for the patient, we will refer the patient to a facility conducting cadaveric liver transplantation. A referral for living liver transplantation is accepted on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday mornings at the outpatient clinic of Surgery. Reservation is not required. The physician in charge will be, Yoshifumi Beck (Thursday), Akira Maki (Tuesday) and Masahiko Komagome (Monday). In case of emergency, call Outpatient clinic at 049-228-3618 on Monday to Saturday 9:00 - 17:00, or 049-228-3595 after hour and ask for the physician in charge of the Department of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery.
- Kidney transplantation
- A referral for kidney transplant is accepted by Dr. Tomonari Ogawa and Dr. Hiroaki Hara. Please call us at the Blood Purification Center at 049-228-3523 for resevation.
- Pancreatic transplantation
- A referral for pancreas transplantation is accepted on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at the outpatient clinic of Surgery. Reservation is not required. The physicians in charge are Yoshifumi Beck (Thursday) and Akira Maki (Tuesday).
