"Never Give Up on Liver Cancer Treatment" - Our Commitment
In liver cancer treatment, it is essential to maintain a delicate balance between controlling the cancer within the liver and preserving hepatic function. This unique requirement sets liver cancer apart from other malignancies and presents challenges rarely encountered in other oncological treatments.
Available treatment modalities include medical interventions such as ablation therapy, transarterial chemoembolization (TACE), and systemic drug therapy, as well as surgical resection and radiation therapy.
Each patient presents with different tumor characteristics and varying degrees of liver function, making standardized treatment approaches inadequate. Therefore, it is necessary to consider multiple therapeutic options and foster collaboration among various medical specialties.
At our center, guided by our motto "Never Give Up on Liver Cancer Treatment," we bring together specialists from each relevant field. Our goal is to explore every possible avenue, regardless of the clinical situation, and deliver the best possible care to as many patients as possible.
Liver cancer can be classified into two categories: primary liver cancer, which originates in the liver, and metastatic liver cancer, which results from the spread of cancer from other organs. Our center specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of primary liver cancer.
Due to the unique characteristics of liver tumors and the organ itself, liver cancer can be diagnosed and treated without histopathological examination, relying instead on imaging studies and tumor markers. This approach is adopted to avoid the risks of tumor seeding and bleeding associated with tissue biopsy.
In other words, treatment decisions are often made based solely on tumor size and number, without pathological tissue diagnosis. However, numerous reports have demonstrated that the histological grade of malignancy (tumor aggressiveness) significantly influences post-treatment prognosis.
Therefore, even in situations where pathological examination is not performed, it is crucial to non-invasively predict tumor malignancy by combining various imaging modalities, including abdominal ultrasound, CT, MRI, and PET-CT.
Furthermore, hepatic function (liver reserve capacity) is a critical factor in liver cancer treatment. While treatment options range from local therapies to systemic drug therapy, available treatment modalities become limited when liver function is compromised. Consequently, it is essential to formulate treatment plans that prioritize the maintenance and improvement of liver reserve capacity.
At our center, specialists from Internal Medicine, Surgery, Diagnostic Radiology, and Radiation Oncology pool their expertise to provide seamless, optimal care for each patient.
Additionally, through our collaboration with the Organ Transplant Center, we can offer liver transplantation as a treatment option for eligible patients and perform living donor liver transplantation. (For deceased donor liver transplantation waiting list registration, patients will be referred to other transplant facilities.)
The liver is often called a "silent organ," and many patients with hepatocellular carcinoma, even in advanced stages, experience no symptoms. If you have any symptoms, please seek medical attention promptly. However, even in the absence of symptoms, we encourage you to visit our center as early as possible.

When you refer patients for evaluation and treatment, regardless of their condition, we strive to have them seen on the same day by staff from either the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology or the Department of Hepatobiliary-Pancreatic Surgery and Pediatric Surgery, which serve as the outpatient entry points for our center.
The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology holds a Wednesday referral clinic staffed by Professor Yusuke Kawamura (Director of the Center) and Dr. Yutaro Hori (Assistant Professor). Same-day appointments are readily accommodated at this clinic, so if it is difficult to secure a fax reservation on short notice, patients are welcome to visit with their referral letter, and we will do our best to see them on the same day. We also offer regular appointment-based clinics: Tuesday with Professor Yusuke Kawamura (Director), and Thursday with Dr. Yutaro Hori (Assistant Professor). While scheduled patients receive priority, we will make every effort to accommodate same-day consultations for walk-in patients with referral letters, though some waiting time may be required.
For the Department of Hepatobiliary-Pancreatic Surgery and Pediatric Surgery, Professor Nobuyuki Takemura (Vice Director of the Center) holds clinic on Fridays, but physicians experienced in liver cancer care are available Monday through Friday. While making an appointment helps ensure more timely service, urgent cases are welcome to come directly with their referral letter, and we will see them on the same day, though some waiting time may occur. Please be assured that all treatment plans are shared and discussed among the Liver Cancer Center staff before treatment initiation.
Weekly Schedule:
If you are unsure which clinic to visit, please feel free to contact either the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology or the Department of Hepatobiliary-Pancreatic Surgery and Pediatric Surgery.
