Introduction

Our mission is to provide the highest quality of patient care at Saitama Medical Center through the evaluation and consultation on patient specimens by integrating cutting edge technology with our extensive specialty resources. We also innovate for improved outcomes and scientific discovery and educate future pathologists using state-of-the-art technologies and resources.

Patient care at our department

Pathological diagnosis plays a major role in the patient care and this is mainly based on microscopic findings obtained by examining tissues and cells from patients. The objects for diagnosis are almost all human malignant tumors, benign tumors and non-neoplastic diseases. The clinical tasks at the Department of Pathology are largely divided into the following four parts.

A. Pathological diagnosis
Some parts of the lesion are removed from patients and they are made into a specimen. This examination is called "biopsy" and a quick and reliable diagnosis is required. We also provide surgical pathology diagnosis with resected tissue or organs during surgery and this helps clinicians to determine clinical treatment strategy like how much tumor is progressing, whether tumor is removed completely, or whether additional treatment is necessary or not. In recent years, pathological specimens have been used to determine the adaptation of molecular target therapeutic agents, and the importance of pathological diagnosis is increasing.
B. Cytology
Cytology is a diagnostic method to observe cells that are peeled off naturally or aspirated from patients in a less painful way than biopsy. Unlike biopsy and surgical specimens, this method can collect cells repeatedly and easily. Most of cytology specimens are judged by certified cytotechnologists and certified cytopathologists make diagnosis when malignant tumor is suspected. It is also possible to diagnose tumor cells in pleural effusion or ascites.
C. Cancer Genomic Medicine
Our hospital provides cancer genomic medicine that is counted on recently. Our department could show some evidence of cancer genomic medicine that could be therapeutic for patients by analyzing genetic abnormalities derived from patients' tissue. We are in corporation with other clinical departments including department of clinical genetics.
D. Pathological autopsy
The physician explains the necessity and the significance of the pathological autopsy to bereaved family and we perform the autopsy with consent from the bereaved family. We evaluate whether the clinical diagnosis and the treatment are proper for a patient who died unfortunately. The result obtained from the autopsy is explained by physicians to the family.

We do not provide medical care directly or in front of patients, but we are always mindful of diagnosing patients rather than just diagnosing pathological tissue specimens.

To the Medical Institutions

Saitama Medical Center in Kawagoe City is the largest general hospital in Saitama prefecture and we examine large numbers of patients' specimens. The yearly number of pathological diagnosis, cytology and pathological autopsy is about 12,000, 10,000, and 20-30, respectively. There are 10 full-time pathologists (including 6 certified pathologists and 1 certified oral pathologist) and 14 medical technologists (including 8 cytotechnologists) in our department. We also invite specialists as part-time staffs to obtain consultations on difficult cases. We held monthly clinical conferences with medical staffs from other clinical departments for the better patient care.

We also diagnose referred specimens from other medical institutions. We would appreciate your understanding and cooperation when there are requests to borrow some pathological specimens or blocks from your hospitals for pathological consultation.

The main research theme in our department is hematological diseases including malignant lymphoma. Our strength is that we have well-trained medical technologists in molecular pathology and FISH testing. We are also accepting consultations on malignant lymphoma from other facilities nationwide.

In addition to medical care and research, we also make much of education for students and residents. Training staffs are able to obtain consultation advices from experienced staffs every day. Recently, all of our residents have been passing the examination held by Japanese Society of Pathology each year and have been working as certified pathologists continuously. We convince that we could provide fruitful resident training in line with the hopes of residents. We look forward to hearing from people who are interested in our department.
