Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

April 2,2024 Update

Introduction

In the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, we treat oral diseases including those of the jawbone. These are diseases that are difficult for your family doctor to treat.

As a typical example, there may be a tooth extraction of a wisdom tooth that has been growing crooked or a tooth extraction where it is difficult to remove. Also, we perform treatments of cysts and tumors, and the treatment which aims at recovery of the bite by implant placement after the tooth has been removed. The implant treatment is carried out in accordance with the flow of consistent treatment, including from the CT imaging before the implanting to regular care after the recovery of bite. In addition, large-scale work for an implant treatment may require hospitalization for treatment. Implant treatment may be possible even for patients with no remaining teeth (full dentures) so please consult your doctor.

Our hospital also has a medical emergency center, and we are working on the treatment of maxillofacial trauma in cooperation with each of the concerned departments. The number of cases for oral surgery with craniofacial fractures makes it one of the most prominent in Saitama Prefecture. Our department will perform a medical examination if you have pain in your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) when you open your mouth.

In recent years, there are some people who have difficulty with dental treatment due to various illnesses. Treatment for these people is also available in our department, including inpatient care. In our department, we also carry out oral care in order to keep the insides of the mouths clean for patients who are hospitalized in other departments in the hospital while they are in the hospital.
In addition, we are a cancer base hospital, and we support the perioperative oral function management for patients in cancer treatment referred by each department in the hospital, as well as palliative care patients so that smooth treatment can be performed. Dental related illnesses can affect not just the mouth, but the whole body. We believe that the early improvement of diseases of the mouth is necessary to live a healthy life.

Please refer to each page for oral implant outpatients, which is a target disease and for the specialist outpatient clinic in our department.

Specialty outpatient clinic: Oral implant outpatient clinic

Implant treatment is a treatment that implants an artificial root (implant) into the part of a jawbone where a tooth has been lost due to a decayed tooth or gum disease and can restore the bite function and aesthetic properties.

Our department has established a treatment system to provide high quality, safe and secure implant treatment as the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Medical University Hospital.
It is possible to perform not only normal implant treatments but also to treat with application of bone reclamation treatment (treatment to regenerate the bone), etc.in cases where the bone of the jaw has been lost due to periodontal disease or trauma, so the person who wants treatment should consult the outpatient doctor.

<The flow of implant treatment in our department>

  1. Initial consultation, oral examination, and imaging examination
  2. Pre-treatment: extraction of teeth with poor prognosis, preparation of temporary dentures, treatment of periodontal disease, etc.
  3. Preoperative precision diagnosis: CT imaging, oral model check, systemic examination (blood, ECG, chest X-Ray)
  4. Implant placement (including bone reclamation)
  5. Secondary surgery
  6. Installing of the final prosthetic
  7. Maintenance

<Features and characteristics of treatment>

In our department, we offer various treatment techniques for the implant treatment as shown below, so it is possible to meet all the needs of patients who want an implant.
  1. Bone regeneration: When the bone of the jaw is lost and it is impossible to implant an implant of normal size, the bone required for the implant is regenerated.
    • Block bone transplant: We transplant the patient's own bone (lower jaw, lumbar bone) into the part where the bone was lost to recover the amount of bone.
    • Sinus floor augmentation: Usually, patient's own bone or the artificial bone is transplanted into a cavity called the maxillary sinus to recover the amount of bone. In addition to this, our department also provides treatment to recover bone mass in a special way without using transplant material.
  2. Immediate load implant: This is a method to restore the bite function from the day of surgery by attaching a temporary prosthesis (temporary tooth) on the same day as implant placement. With this treatment, patients are not required to wear dentures during the waiting period (treatment is performed only in cases where it can be adapted).
  3. Short implant
  4. Tilted implant
