Department of Orthopaedic Surgery

October 25,2023 Update

Introduction

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is a medical department that deals with musculoskeletal disorders and pain in the limbs and spine. Locomotion and movement of the limbs play important role in activities such as labor, learning, and hobbies. When you think about a purpose of life and the quality of the life you live, motor functions have an important meaning as well for the dignity of life. Disorders that make it so you can't go on a trip or can't play sports because your knees hurt, you can't eat with chopsticks or can't write well because your hands are paralyzed, you can't walk because your feet are paralyzed and can't work because of your sciatica, etc. are serious problem for patients and a significant social loss as well. The treatment for these disabled people is a duty of orthopedic surgery.

Results in line with the patient's expectations are not necessarily achieved at the current level of medicine. Our department strives to provide information on current medical results and the best treatment possible. In outpatient care, it is important to realize that only the patient recognaizes the pain. It is necessary to tell us how it hurts by the patient themselves, and it is necessary to involve the patient's own judgment about the effect of the treatment. Because it is necessary as a university hospital to cope with a high degree of difficulty, please understand that we often request treatment at a neighboring medical institution for diseases that do not need surgery, and for diseases where the treatment does not differ from the neighboring medical institutions. Also, we cover most orthopedic diseases, but we may advise you to visit the Department of Bone and Soft Tissue Oncology at the Saitama Medical Center.

We are making efforts to improve the performance and safety of surgery. However, all medical intervention involves risks. Our aim is to provide a high level medical care. We try to provide the best feasible treatment which does not differ from the patient's expectations, so we ask you to decide surgery only after understanding things fully.

Patient care at our department

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is mainly aimed at the functional reconstruction of the motor functions, dealing with trauma in a wide range of areas such as limb motility and the spinal column, and degenerative diseases due to aging.
You can be treated in general outpatient clinics , but you may be asked to visit the various specialist outpatient clinics for more specialized cases.

Spinal outpatient (Tue./ Fri.)
The spine not only supports the head and body, but also protects the nerves of the spinal cord that govern the movement and sensation. We often identify the cause of the symptoms in outpatient treatment and then perform surgery at the appropriate timing. We do not perform endoscopic surgery in our hospital. We may ask for treatment at a nearby medical clinic if surgery is not suitable, such as for a cervical sprain (whiplash).
Sports knee outpatient (Mon./ Tue./ Wed.)
We handle trauma, disease and sports disorders of the knee in general. Many surgeries have been performed using arthroscopic surgery, and we are also involved in osteotomy, artificial knee joint surgery, and autologous bone cartilage transplantation, for osteoarthritis of the knee. After determining the cause of the sports disability, we are often involved in rehabilitation at an affiliated facility, Kawagoe Clinic the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery for Sports Medicine.
Shoulder and elbow joint outpatient clinic (Mon./ Wed.)
We generally handle trauma, degenerative diseases and sports impediments of the shoulder and elbow joints etc.
Pain in the shoulder and elbow is not limited to problems with the joints alone, and there are many things that require conditioning of the whole body. We maintain a close relationship with our rehabilitation staff and carry out conservative therapy centering on physical therapy. In many cases where surgery is required, low impact arthroscopic surgery is available. In addition we also perform artificial shoulder replacement surgery for osteoarthritis in the elderly, and we provide the best treatment according to the condition and the needs for all ages and diseases, from the child to the athlete and the elderly.
Hip joint, artificial joint outpatient clinic (Mon./ Thu.)
We are targeting patients who suffer from joint pain and patients who were encouraged to have an artificial joint replacement in another hospital as well as those who want to seek the opinion of other physicians.
We are focusing on artificial joints in the leg (hip joint, knee joint), but we also perform osteotomy for joints that do not require artificial joints.
Hand Surgery Outpatient (Thu.)
Currently, we are closed due to circumstances. We are very sorry for the inconvenience to those patients who wish for a consultation.
Pediatric surgery (once a month on Tuesdays)
We invite experienced part-time doctors to perform pediatric surgery here twice a month. Please call to confirm the day of treatment.

To the Medical Institutions

General outpatient is available from Monday to Friday in the mornings. The afternoon specialist examination is a completely reservation system, so first, please refer them to general outpatient in the morning, and if necessary, the doctor will give a medical request to an appropriate specialist physician.

When you refer them, please attach as much image data and examination results as possible.

Because outpatient has an alternating system on Saturdays, referrals are not accepted in principle, except in the case where it is an emergency.

We try to accept referrals as much as possible, but some cases may not be accepted, such as bone soft tissue tumors, multiple traumas, or severe trauma. In this case, we may request that the Department of Bone and Soft Tissue Oncology at Saitama Medical School International Medical Center, and the trauma team of the Department of Emergency and Critical Care Medicine in our hospital handle it.

Reception for second opinions
Please inform us in advance about the content and circumstances of your consultation and the doctor you would like to consult with. Because it is a reservation system (in 30 minute increments), we will specify the date and time at that time.

We are looking for medical staff for our department.

Of course, doctors who are interested in being a specialist as well as senior residents (specialists) should please come and visit us. We sincerely welcome you.

Since we are practicing high quality medical care, I am sure that we will be able to be helpful to the doctors. We are also interested in short term enrollment so consider that as well.
