Department of Endocrinology and Diabetes

November 15,2021 Update

Introduction

The Department of Endocrinology and Diabetology at Saitama Medical University General Medical Center focuses on the treatment and research of diabetes mellitus, endocrine disorders, and hereditary rare intractable diseases. The Department of Endocrinology and Diabetes was established in 1985 as the first Department of Internal Medicine, focusing on gastrointestinal diseases, diabetes, and endocrine diseases. After the first Professor, Dr. Fukashi MATSUZAKI, Dr. Shoji Kawazu and Dr. Masafumi Matsuda were assigned as a professor in the General Medical Center. Since 2019, Yoshihiko IZUMIDA joined the department from the University of Tokyo as a professor in the field of endocrinology and diabetes.
Endocrine diseases also require accurate diagnosis and treatment of various symptoms associated with the alteration of a wide range of hormone-producing organs in the body. We are committed to providing you with the latest medical care in the field of endocrinology and diabetes mellitus, where drug discovery and development are keenly advancing, by promoting specialized medical care in our specialized fields.
Our department is practicing excellent team medicine and has about 40 diabetes care instructors, which is the third largest number in Japan next to the University of Tokyo Hospital. We work as a multidisciplinary metabolic medical team to ensure that diabetic patients can receive safe and high-quality medical care at our hospital. The team consists of physicians, pharmacists, dietitians, clinical laboratory technicians, physical therapists, and nurses, and many of them have professional qualifications such as the Japan Diabetes Therapy Instructor.

About our department

The Department of Endocrinology and Diabetology diagnoses patients on the first visit and treats patients professionally on the second visit by appointment. The Department of Endocrinology and Diabetology provides highly specialized outpatient services such as genetic diabetes, dyslipidemia, perinatal diabetes, care for insulin pump, evaluation of diabetic complications, and thyroid and endocrine diseases. In particular, since our medical center has one of the world's largest comprehensive perinatal medical centers, we can provide high-quality medical service on the extensive experience in the management of pregnant women with diabetes and thyroid diseases. Accessibility to medical care on right time and right facility is important for the long-term treatment of diabetes, our department cooperates with a network on regional clinics so that patients can visit the appropriate medical institution at the appropriate time. We encourage you to get a Patient Referral Document from your local clinic to our department, and we will refer you back to your local clinic after your condition is cured.

To the Medical Institutions

When the conditions of diabetes or endocrine disease has stabilized, they will be referred to a nearby medical institution. At that time, the information of the referral list for diabetes and thyroid gland disease will be presented to the patient in an A4 version and the patient will choose from the list. If possible, please provide the name of the medical institution, address, access, medical table, doctor's name, etc. together in the A4 version. Please let us know whether you can have injectable preparations for diabetes, anti-thyroid medication, or prescriptions for thyroid preparations. Also, if patients wish hospitalization for diabetes education or education for dialysis prevention, we will refer the patient with detailed information after the education.
